If you are new to photography or at least new to digital slr cameras, then you may be wondering why many cameras, digital and film, are sold without lenses, i.e. you buy just the camera body.
There are two main reasons for this:-
- It allows you to choose what lens to buy, you may want a fixed focal length lens for your standard set-up or a powerful zoom, or you may want a third party lens.
- If you already have a set of lenses for a current camera, then you don't need a pre-fitted standard lens.
As your interest, skill and passion for photography increase you will find that you have spent much, much more on lenses than it is possible to spend on a single body.
Because you're reading this you are either a Nikon fan already or gaining knowledge to inform your future decisions. My main piece of advice is to concentrate less on brand (is there anything else that comes close to a Nikon?) and more on your budget and what you'll be doing with your camera. Research the lens(es) you need and prioritise their purchase.
If your photography is just a hobby then any of the DX format bodies will serve you well (D3000, D5000 or D90), if you like using preset programs for scenes (portrait, night, sunsets etc) then stick with the D3000 or D5000. If you don't have much use for preset scenes and want to get really involved with the physics of photography then the D90 is for you.
On the other hand, if you are taking your photography to the next level either as a professional or super-hobbyist then you should really consider the D300s, this is Nikon's flagship DX format dslr camera, or the D700, their entry level FX format digital slr camera.
For the real professional photographers needing indestructible reliability and performance then the D3 is the model of choice. This comes in two options: the D3s, fitted with a 12.1 megapixel FX format CMOS sensor or the D3X which boasts a 24.5 megapixel FX format CMOS sensor.
